Sweet September Memories

We can finally celebrate fall and not get shunned by those people that go by the book for everything. It’s officially FALL!!! Of course if you follow me on Instagram I’ve been doing fall-ish things since the beginning of September. I thankfully married a man who puts up with me and my over-the-top need to celebrate season changes with open arms and trips to Hobby Lobby to coordinate the décor to whatever is happening outside. And speaking of that man, 2 years ago yesterday, he asked me to marry him. He said it was the most exciting day of his life. Even better than his wedding day. And he’s probably right.

I’ll never forget the details of that day. It was a Saturday. I got done working and we had a date night planned for one of my favorite restaurants in town. When I got home Ryan was very patient with me. He told me to take as much as I needed to get ready and if you know Ryan, you know he’s not the most patient. Especially if there’s a meal to be had. So, I took my time. And I took some more. He was sooo patient. I knew something was up. So, I decided to test my limits and told him I needed to paint my nails before we leave (because if there’s going to be a pretty new diamond to show off, a girls gotta have her nails done). Again, he was 110% ok with me taking my sweet time.

When we go to the restaurant we had a drink at the bar, I remember ordering the blueberry mojito and absolutely loving it. It had fresh mint from the restaurants garden and I can still remember thinking it was the best drink I ever had. Once we were seated and looking at the menu, Ryan told me I could get whatever I wanted. Which I usually do without his permission, but him having to tell me this, made me raise an eyebrow. But I went with it.

During that dinner I remember getting so mad. Ryan was on his phone for about 70% of the time. Now, I look at my phone too, but when I’m out to dinner with someone, I really try to leave it in my person and give the other person the time of day. I rolled my eyes and ate my pasta when he came up with some excuse about his friend and wife having “marriage problems.” Whatever, I had fried calamari and a bowl of gnocci in front of me. I was going to be just fine.

Now this is where it gets good. After dinner he was very adamant about taking a walk – which we usually do when we’re down by the lake but he was SOOOO picky about where we were going to sit and take in the view of the lake. He had an excuse for every place I thought would be perfect. In one place there were too many people, in another place it was too open, in another place it wasnt private enough. At this point, I didn’t know what he had up his sleeve. Was he planning on murdering me or proposing?

We finally agreed on a little alcove near the water. It was a little cold so he gave me a bear hug and then started out what would be his proposal… “I’ve been lying to you this whole week. I didn’t go to Milwaukee for work, I went to go get this…” And he proceeds to pull out the most beautiful Neil Lane diamond ring. But of course I didn’t even look at it because I was too stunned at what was happening and I just kept staring at his face and telling him to “shut up” because I’m classy and refined like that. Obviously.

Well, eventually I stopped telling him to shut up and realized he wasn’t kidding. And then I said “YES!” And he gave a sigh of relief. Once I stopped crying, I finally looked at the ring and then started crying again. By the end of that night, there was no makeup left on my face and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We both agreed that it was the best day either of us ever had. It was exciting and exhilarating for him and a total fairytale/shock for me. Getting to tell all of our friends and family was so fun. There’s nothing better than delivering good news, like an engagement!

On Sunday we will be celebrating our one year wedding anniversary. I have no idea where that year went. But if all of them go this fast, we have a lot of memories to make and we’ll be celebrating 50 years in no time. There is no one else I would rather do life with. I love you, Ryan Weldon! ❤
